Default Gas Gauge Failing or what?

So today i put $40 into my Ranger and filled it up basically well i got int and it took a little while for it to get up to the Full line and then i stopped and got some food with my dad and got back in and the thing dropped down to the not the full line but the line after it and has been acting strange as i drove home it started to go back up. Is the Gauge failing or what?

From one Rick to another, You will get some small variance on the gauge when the truck is moving and when it has sat for awhile ,back it the day Ford put what was called a "constant voltage regulator" in the gauge circuit to keep the fuel and temp from swinging all over the place now the computer does it. The computer will attempt to average out the sloshing around of the gas to give you a reading. My truck reads lower when driving and it sits awhile will read about 2 needle widths higher..

Torque it down till it breaks off, then back it off 1/4 turn.
