Default Cylinder 3 misfire? Not plugs or wires.

Hey guys, have a 2001 3.0 Ranger, it was missing really bad so changed the plugs and wires and started running better but it still misses when it is idling or I am pulling away. Could it be the coil?? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

could be a coil pack, you could have cracked a plug putting them in (the tiniest nearly invisibile crack can do it), could have a bad wire in the bunch, maybe you put them in the wrong order or the boot isnt completely on the plug (mine were a pain in the a$$)

I checked the coil pack and it seems there's only sparks coming from 4 out of the 6, as I've changed the plugs and wires within the last week does this sound like the coil?

it still could be any of the above. its a pain in the butt but take each plug out and carefully inpect it. when you plug the boot on make sure you hear/feel that little popping into place noise. a coil pack will run you $80 at advance.

If the 2 cylinders that do not have spark are 3 & 4 then replace the coil pack.
The cylinders pairs are 1/5,2/6,3/4

sounds exactly like what i had when my coil pack went bad, only had a missfire on one cylinder but boy did it idle rough.

i bought a new accel super coil coil pack, from jegs i think, for a tad less than the auto parts chain's coil packs. solved the problem and the truck has been running great for a year or so

It was 1 and 3 that was misfiring. I changed the coil pack and there's still a slight miss. Guess i'll need to take out the plugs.

when your done with that (if they all look good...LOOK CLOSELY) take off each wire one by one from the coil pack. its easy and a 5 minute check. Take any 1 wire off, see if the truck idles rougher (it should), then replace it. You may also see an electric spark/current running from the coil pack to the removed wire. Thats fine, your safe. It wont touch you unless you touch it first. Return the wire its spot and remove another. Repeat for every wire.

If it does not run rougher or you do not hear/see the electric current, that single wire or plug is bad and you have pin pointed the cylinder with the problem.

Looks like O'Reilly's gave me a bad coil! I unplugged the wires and this time 5 was missing! Took the coil back and got a new one and it seems to be running smoother, I'll take it a drive later and see how it is!

Well it looks like the missing has gone but now when I put it in park and rev the engine it only goes up to 3000rpm and starts shaking yet it drives fine, any ideas with this? One thing gets fixed then another goes!

Just a wild guess saw a jeep with a 6 cylinder in it that had a miss on cylinder 3 it had a broken valve spring
