I've searched and Googled for solutions to this problem... but I'm still running into issues.

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT, and my rear brakes don't seem to want to disengage/engage when I start driving. It's a manual, so I use the parking brake all the time.

When backing out of the garage, as soon as I hit the clutch, it's usually the right rear that locks up and even skids.

Same deal when I go to push my truck out of the garage. Without starting the engine, I take the parking brake off, and start pushing... it rolls freely until I hear the brake rub, and it becomes nearly impossible to push. The problem goes away once I'm driving forward and jab the brakes hard a couple of times.

Not too sure if this is relevant, but when putting the parking brake on, sometimes the pedal goes down what feels like normally... and sometimes starts to, but feels like it slips on something, and slams to the floor.

Really sorry if there's already an answer, but I'm stumped..

Actually just saw where there was a recall on the 2010's because the parking brake was malfunctioning due to the brake being engaged in cold temps and freezing causing the cable to pull free from the brake assembly when disengaged, you might check the cable. Hope that helps

That's interesting! My truck is a bit older than the 2010's... Is there anything I should be looking for in the cable? (should it be sort of dangly when disengaged?)

I would think so, but not positive. Check it disengaged if no luck, engage it and see if where it would T off if one side has more play than the other. Otherwise I would take the rear drum apart and put it back together. Doing so you may be able to spot the issue or just get things "tweeked" properly

And yea I saw it was a little older, just happened to be looking at recalls for my 2010 like 10 min prior to seeing thread. Odd coincidence

I will give that a check tomorrow, and report back to see if that helped!

Replace the 2 rear e-brake cables. They are the 2 that are in rubber hoses. The front and middle cable are just cables. No hoses. The cables get stuck in the old hoses.

Had the same problem with my old f150. Only when it was wet though. I never did figure out what the issue was

E-Brake cable too. The cable frays the rubber starts swelling when wet and if it gets cold they freeze.

That's good to know! (If there are instructions to do that floating around anywhere, a link would be cool, but if not, I can figure it out)

It's been seeming to be unstuck as of late, but I definitely want to solve this problem!

Did you happen to ever figure out if it was the e-brake line rubbing/needing replacement, or if it was something else? I have the same issue on my 97 Ranger that is never driven. Thinking of replacing all springs, but not sure if you had any luck with that?
