Heat stuck on defrost/feet
So where should I start on this one.
It's -20 w/ windchill out this time of year and as the title says, my heater is stuck on defrost and I believe the floor vents are pushing some air, but it doesn't seem to be as much as normal on the floor.
I've tried every setting (not a/c equipped) with no change.
It's not the worst place in the world for it to be stuck but my 20 mile commute in the morning is damn cold without the main vents going.

When you have a vacuum leak in the hvac system it defaults to defrost. Any codes?

Re: Heat stuck on defrost/feet
The controls for which vents the air flows out of is vacuum operated. The vacuum line is either broken or disconnected. Follow the line from end to end:
- Manifold vacuum port on the driver side of the engine
- Wraps around the back of the engine and goes under the air filter box
- There is a vacuum reservoir ball under the air filter box it connects to
- Another line out of the reservoir into the cab behind the glove box
- Into the HVAC control panel

This was the problem. Or is rather...
The line that leads behind the head runs from this ball. The first section of the line directly attached to the ball is the broken one. I used electrical tape to jerry-rig it together, however, is this part of the line its own piece sold by the auto store or is this something I will have to deal with in another way?

Re: Heat stuck on defrost/feet
It's just ordinary vacuum line. You can replace it, nothing special.

Even the connectors/adapters on the ends? Attached to the vac ball and behind the head?

Re: Heat stuck on defrost/feet
You should be able to get vaccum line with an ID that will slip over it and fit tightly. And some couplers to connect to the existing hose if needed.

Re: Heat stuck on defrost/feet
Thanks a lot! I actually got this all sorted out right after work. Autozone had a coupler kit with the exact ends I needed and hard flex vacuum line all for $9.50.
