ranger died and wont start
Hey guys, im new to the forum. I am stranded on the side of the road with a dead ranger. The truck stalled at a stop sign (i thought i let the rpms get too low, its a manual), shook kind of violently, then would not start back up again. I disconnected the fuel filter and tried to start it, it shot fuel out of it, so i know fuel is being delivered. pulled the air filter out incase its completely clogged, still nothing. The starter attempts to crank it, but it just wont do anything, there is an occassional shaking, but never a start. If anyone has any experience with this sort of problem or can point me in a direction, i would very much appreciate it.
Thanks

Re: ranger died and wont start
Hey guys, i noticed this morning this morning that when i disconnect the maf sensor, the truck will actually brielfy start then die. I put a new maf in and now it starts up but dies right away. any throttle at all will just make it die faster. I checked the throttle position sensor and its getting the 5 volts and the potentiometer is working. I hooked an obd scanner to it and it doesn't show any codes at all. i checked the timing belt per Jessmoneys advice, and it appears to be fine. I also checked the coils and they do not show an open on the primary, and the secondarys are all about about 12k ohms. Im really at a loss as to whats goin on. Any ideas?
Thanks

- YIKES! you need a signature....go to control panel then signature....we have no idea of the year engine etc....
- what was the resistance reading on the primary for the coil......from my memory I thought the secondary was suppose to be 13k-15k..
- I agree it sounds like you could have a giant vacuum leak.....but I thought you would have a code if you did?
- there is a shrader valve(tire valve) on the fuel rail.....you can check pressure there.

Re: ranger died and wont start
eh..... try disconnecting the wire goin from the distributor to the ignition coil and try have someone start it or do it ureself just gotta listen for the spark. After you see it spark put the wire back on the ignition coil and try start em again.

keep checking for codes.....you might catch a pending code......for d crank or a cam sensor.........
pour a 1/4 cup of gas into the TB or spray starter fluid into the Tb.....see what it does......
I like stinkbaits theory of a giant vacuum leak.....look around for one.....it explains the problem and does not cost anything......ie. if you pulled your line of the brakebooster the truck will die!
I know you have some fuel pressure at the filter.....but eventually if you don't figure it out someone is probably going to test the pressure......the shrader valve on the fuel rail makes it easy.....takes about 10 minutes if you have the gauge.
----------
another free DX is to swap the coilpacks.....it is not foolproof but it can help....

Re: ranger died and wont start
not sure how I missed this the first time, but the timing belt should have enough tension on it that I would not be able to slide it back and forth on the pulley about a quarter of an inch with 1 finger?

I am not sure. It seems excessive to me . I can check mine later for you and let you know what mine does.

You would think if it jumped time or it is loose that you would have a pending code. Although it would answer your issue. You most likely either have a giant vacuum leak or something that is throwing the timing off

Re: ranger died and wont start
thanks, i finally pulled the cover back more to get a really good look, and its pretty floppy on the right hand side. using 1 finger i can slide it forwards and backwards on the pulley, and if i grabbed it on the right hand side with my whole hand, i could easily pull the thing off.

Re: ranger died and wont start
I went out and tried mine( IN THE COLD, WIND AND SNOW ).......there is a little deflection on the belt if i push it in.......but I cannot move the belt or the cam pulley at all.......
----------
I checked it again. I can not slide my belt forward or backward......
