Default MPG reports...is this for real?

I was looking at Ranger MPG reports and for the 4x4 3.0 automatic, it gets 14 city, 18 highway. It also says the 4x4 4.0 automatic gets 14 city, 18 highway. Is this for real? Or flawed reporting??
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymod...r_Pickup.shtml

I know the 3.0 is a 4 speed and the 4.0 is a 5 speed, but if they get the same MPG, why would anyone go for a 3.0??

but this report is accurate?
so if i see a 3.0 and a 4.0 in relatively the same condition for the same price, the 4.0 is the no-brainer?

i wouldin't really say it's accurate. i get roughly 18 in the winter running around the backroads here... i usually get 20 in the summer. out on the highway i average anywhere from 24-26 MPG. but it depends alot on gearing too, my truck has 3.73's, seems like the perfect ratio for a 3.0 with stock size tires. my buddie's 3.0 has 4.10's and he was lucky to see 20 on the highway.

Yes it's accurate. The 3.0 & 4.0 are rated for the same MPG. The 3.0 is offered at a lower cost, so you should be able to get more bang for your buck with a 3.0 in regards to a newer Ranger or etc.

As you'll see by all the MPG threads and MPG posts that will surely follow... everyone gets different MPG. But remember, whatever that persons MPG is, there's no way to know what they would be getting with the other 6 cylinder engine.

At the end of the day, they are rated for the same MPG. And you'll see posts on this forum from 3.0 owners with MPG ranging from around 11 - 22, and you'll see 4.0 owners with MPG ranging from around 11 - 22.

Mainly depends on the driver, maintenance upkeep, tires, type of commute (EG: highway vs city) and etc.

The only thing the 3.0 has on the 4.0 is that they are flex fuel vehicles.

Not really a big plus for most but I've seen more and more company's adding special parking spots for car pool and hybrid vehicles only.

you've probibly got steeper gears then me. i also drive the same route alot so i've figured out how i can almost coast along alot of the way, the truck stays under 2000 RPM in overdrive probibly 70% of the time.

You had better buy a new calculator.
