Default 1985 Ford Ranger 4 cyl 4x4

1985 Ford Ranger 4 Cyl 2.3l gas 4x4

Picked up the Ranger from a guy who couldn't figure out what was wrong with it for $100. Fuel pump wasn't turning on. New fuel pump, still nothin. Finally figured it to be the fuel relay. It fired up after sitting for a year like it was brand new. 15 miles later, me and the girlfriend are takin it out for a country cruise and as we're going around a curve, it dies. Figured I'd try to start it back up, and all that happens is a loud clicking noise coming from the passenger side(where the solenoid is located.) Tried to jump the solenoid with a plier, and all it did was make the clicking noise. As we we're pushing it a half mile to our house we turned the head lights on so we could see and then the gauges went off along with the lights. It was like we had a loose battery cable. Checked them both, and they were tight as could be. Any ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Battery cables, terminals, bad battery. Check those first.

maybe the motor locked up?

but more likely it may have a bad alternator or voltage regulator

If it was the fuel filter it would still turn over. I believe we already ruled that one out. Cables, battery, and terminals are all brand new.

I doubt the motor locked up, it's full on all its fluids.

Couldn't the clicking be a solenoid or starter problem?

I had that same prob on my 95 it turned out to be the solenoid. Hope it helps

Solenoid, alternator or starter. Might the alternator since you had battery power to turn the lights on until the battery died, so the battery wasn't charging. If it is the alternator, I'd test the battery to make sure its still good and the alternator didn't make it go bad.

Went out to where it was sitting, hooked up jumper cables, and she fired right up. Had to jump it a few times till i figured out what was tripping it. I would pull on the light knob to turn the lights on and it immediately died. Lost all power, etc. I pounded on the dash right next to the knob, and all the lights and power came back, but it didn't have enough juice to start it.
