going to upgrade
I have a 97 Ranger with a 3 liter. I am going to get an 04 or newer.
This is not a bashing thread or anything but the Ranger I get will have the 4 liter.
My questions are what rear ratio should I get?
What gas mileage will I get?
Is the 4 liter much more powerful than the 3 liter?

The SOHC 4.0 (post 01 4 liter) Produces 207hp @5200 rpms and 238 lb/ft of torque @ 3,000 rpms. Your 3.0 produces 147hp @ 5000 RPM and 162 lb/ft @ 3250 RPM.
Gear ratio really depends on what type of driving you do and what size tires you are running.

Re: going to upgrade
As far as gear ratio mostly in town driving. Occasional trips. Very little towing a cargo trailer. Looking for best gas mileage.
Mine gets close to 18 in town and 20 - 22 long trips.
I do know the 3 liter is almost bullet proof, how about the 4 liter?

Yeah, I reality the 3.0 and 4.0 get about the same mpg. And really, all of the ranger engines are bulletproof if taken car of, the 2.3 3.0 and 4.0.
For mostly in town and best mpg and light towing, I would go 3.73 or 3.55s. 4.10s will reduce mileage but improve acceleration and towing.

Any engine is reliable if its taken care of. Expect the same gas mileage as your 3.0, and not much better. You'll have a considerable amount more power compared to your 3.0 though.
