Thumbs down 200 RPM surge

97 Ranger V6 idles with a slight surge about every 3seconds. It only surges 200 rpm and then steady. You notice at idle only, once driving or pulling is fine. No code or other problem. Where would I begin? IAC? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have the same problem on my 05 4.0 ranger. Surges for about 1.5-2 seconds then fine... Talked to the mechanic he said I just need new spark plugs and wire and that would stop it. But he said that the surge is nothing to worry about....

OK found my surging problem, well more like found the cause than fixed it. I noticed since the weather warmed a bit, the surging was gone. Got to thinking (not always good) and found it only surges when the blower motor is running. I turn the blower off and it idles perfectly. Ya think I've got alternator problems, or just run it till alternator dies. Temps dropped again and haven't taken time to do any other tests.

Its mostly likely your A/C compressor. Whenever you have your truck on an A/C setting OR a defrost setting, the compressor operates. When the compressor clutch kicks on, it will raise the RPMs about 200-3000 RPMs. It also sounds like you could be low on refrigerant in the system because it is cycling quite often.

Checked it again today and it surges with the fan running. No defrost mode, no AC compressor activity. Just turn the fan on in heat mode only and it surges slightly. Turn it off and it's fine.
