Exclamation Bought the truck a while ago. Now it shakes BAD around 50mph

Hey guys, I've been looking around at forums to see which one to join and noticed that this one was pretty active. I hate to be the one that joins with a question right away, but i did look around and i don't see anything quite like what i have going on.

I took the truck out with a friend and went tearing through some mud, just a few passes. After i got back out on pavement the truck started shaking and wobbling at around 35mph and got real bad at 45+ mph. My friend said it was because of the mud on the tires. I kept driving and noticed that it got better at 35mph. Problem is now it starts vibrating and shaking at about 45mph and gets really bad at 55-65 (haven't taken it over that.) It feels like its possibly side to side but i can't tell. The steering wheel also shakes and rotates left and right as well. My friend says its that the tires are off balance. Ive looked around and tried to shake the driveshaft and it doesn't shake, only rotates a little. Oh, and there was one part while mudding that was some really hardened mud ruts that were fairly big that i blew through cause i didn't want to get my 2wd stuck as the rear tires were still in the mud.

Sorry for the essay, i just want to put all the information out there. I don't know much about these as all I've owned before isn't much like this truck. Thanks in advance for the help guys!
The truck is a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 2wd. 116,000 miles and babied by a grandpa before me if that helps.

Does the truck have a sway bar or torsion bars?? Im not familiar with that 2wd suspension stuff.
It could be mud built up in the time and along the brake area.
I recently went mudding, and have washed mine like crazy and there's still mud chunks all over up under there.

Also check ball joints and wheel bearings.
All else fails, take it in for an alignment check.

I thought it could possibly be the alignment because of the steering wheel deal. I don't believe that it has a torsion bar or anything like that since its not an edge or 4wd. It had a smooth ride before so i know it happened then. Im just wondering if its something i can continue to drive on or if its possibly something to do with the axle.

And how do i check the u joint and ball bearings> Or is that something i need to take it in to a shop?

if the tires are off balance it can cause a pretty good shake in the steering wheel.

I feel stupid for not thinking of this my self. Problem has been solved! I crawled under the truck with the hose and soaked everything and got most of the mud of the front shocks and axle and from inside the rims. I guess thats what it was because now its a very mild shake around 65. I assume there was so much mud in the pockets of the rims it threw it off balance. Thanks guys!
