Default Tank overflows when filled after 3 gallons

I just bought a 92 Ranger XLT 4cyl manual. When I got it the gas gauge read between a quarter and a half a tank. After a little over a hundred miles it was reading close to empty. I went to the gas station and started filling it and the pump stopped after about 3 gallons was pumped. I restarted it thinking it was just a fluke and noticed a puddle of gas forming underneath a few seconds later. The fuel nozzle looked a little worn so i pulled around to a different pump and the same thing happened after about a gallon was pumped. The fuel gauge then read about a half a tank. I messed around with the angle the nozzle entered the fill neck to no avail. I crawled underneath and tapped on the tank to see if maybe it was actually full and the gauge was just reading less and it sounded hollow and empty. To confirm my suspicions that its overflowing when it only has a few gallons in it I plan to just throw a gas can in the back and drive it till it runs dry. But I was wondering if anyone has run into a similar issue and if so how did you fix it?

Edit: when i crawled under the fuel tank was wet with gas on the fuel neck side. The neck is dry and I cant really see if there is a leak in the tank as the frame rail is in the way. I bought the ranger from my fathers dealership and they went over it really well before i got it as I'm family. Plus the tank is plastic so rust isn't an issue. Im stumped.....

try not putting the nozzle in quite so far. Learned that on the 1st ranger i had.

either that, or your guage is messed up. i know on my 01 ( i know not the same) it likes to float. one day it will read f and the next e... so i always go by my mileage.. 100 miles isnt much on a 4 cl so it could just be its reading wrong. could also be the float.. it is a 18 y/o truck... just trying to help ya out.

My '88 does the same thing. Pisses me off... takes ten minutes just to get it up to 1/2 tank. It isn't venting so you have to sit and wait for the gas to go in as the air is trying to come up out of the tank passed the gas that's going in.
