Default Screwy oil pressure gauge

Okay, so here goes.

My '99 3.0 4x2 V-6 has an oil leak. I'm aware of it, and keep an eye on my oil.

My problem is this: When driving home today I noticed my oil pressure gauge being really, really weird.

When at idle, be it 1500 RPM when cold, or 1000 when warm, the oil pressure gauge reads nothing.

When the RPMs get to about 1800-1900, it gets really weird, flicks around all over the place.

Once I hit 2000, it settles and reads normally. But only over 2000! What the heck? Does this make sense?

i would say the oil pressure sending unit?... that happened on a buddies truck its on the back passenger side of the block you access it from the top of the motor. it was only twelve dollars.

That's what my dad said... and a little google research, too.

Now, could the sending unit be bad and cause a leak, too?

I would be very nervous about running it with it doing that. With the Ford oil pressure gauges, they are either on or off. They don't vary at all. Below 6 psi the gauge will be all the way down, and above 6 psi it will read right in the middle. If it is flickering like you say it is, I would double check the oil and make sure that it is not due for an oil change.

^^ditto. Check that oil, top if off, fix the leak, put in a real oil pressure gauge to test the actual engine pressure(even just temp, this would be a good idea). How many miles on the engine?

But yeah, it could be literally insufficient oil, oil pump, bad gauge cluster, bad oil pressure sending unit, etc.

When RPMs are low, oil pressures are low. When RPM rises, oil pressure rises.
