Default 2002 Ranger XLT 4X4 4.0 Drive Problem

2002 ranger with 90000 miles will now not go into 4x4 - the swith on dash will not engage anything. Upon startup the lights in instrument cluster come on fine for their test. shifting either into hi or low has no effect - checked all fuses (ok) - replaced dash switch - no change. Any help would be appreciated
