You'd need a new key w/ chip and a PATS reprogram. The reprogram will basically reset the PATS crap and the key chips to the truck's system so that it'll recognize the keys. I don't remember if this is correct or not, but I wanna say you need to get TWO new keys in order to 'reset'. But like I said, it's been some time since I've really looked into it. I didn't have the money then....don't have it now....still havn't done it and only rockin' one key. lol.
Since I really am questioning my memory now, best bet is to take a drive over to the dealer and talk to them about it and post up what you find out! lol.

I am pretty sure that what Shane is saying is correct. If you already have 2 keys that are operational in your truck, then you can reprogram more yourself. The procedure I believe should be in the owner's manual, but I am not sure since my truck doesn't have the PATS system. If you only have 1 key that works, then your stuck going to the dealer to have another reprogramed. If you have your own higher end scan tool you could do it yourself, but I highly doubt that because very few people have their own high quality scan tool.

The dealer can program new keys with the scan tool. They don't actually need two keys.

I was told that if there's two working keys already there, it's an easy at-home add-on for new keys. But if there's only one, there needs to be a whole system reflash/reset.

| | Re Ranger Keys with Transponder Chip
You need two working keys to program them on your own.
1998+ 1st key in ignition > on > off (dont start)
Remove key and insert second key, again on > off >
Then put the new key in ignition, > again on > off > (still no start)
The dash security light will come on for a few seconds confirming
the new key. It should then be able to start the vehicle.
I have done this on a 2009 as I want a key without key fobs or
any of my other keys attached it I have to use valet parking.

Their explanation was as follows: If you have 2 keys we can program your 3rd key with the first 2. But if you only have 1 key and need a 2nd key, we have to program it here for 'security purposes: because of the computer chip'.
Thank god my hunka junk came with 2 .

my ranger only came with one ignition key. we went to go get another made. for one i believe it was about 80 bucks and for two it was a total of like 110 or something. from a dealership. you're better off getting two made if possible. but if you go to walmart or something, they'll just make you a door key for like a dollar or somethin like that.

You can actually get fobs online, and program them yourself.
On top of the tow bill for my car to be towed to the dealer.
I tried take a couple chip keys I bought on EBAY to have the cut at Ace but they couldn't.

I bought a couple off of ebay and took them to the local locksmith who took a machine out with him, plugged it into the truck and coded two keys for me(I only had one) for $55.
$55 + 2 ebay keys $34 = $89...not going to the stealership...priceless!!!
