Default Throwing a CEL Code

Hey Guys,
I was wondering if you can check engine codes without having a scanner. I had an 89 Firebird Formula 350 and I know you could paper clip it. What happened is that my truck just decided to throw a code. Checked all fluids and fuses. Everything looks good. No shales rattles or noises. Idels perfect too. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Paper clip it? I would just go to autozone and have them scan it for free.

x2 some cars you could check with the key on ac power but don't think you can on the ranger. advance and auto zone and lots other parts stores check for free and even give you a nice little print out

Okay cool. Yeah I guess with OBD1 cars like my old trans am, if I had my SES light come on, you could take a paper clip, put it in pin holes A and g? Or something, turn car to acc, and the SES light would flash in sequences of 2. Like it may flash 2 times then 4. You'd check your hayes manual and it'll tell you what a code 24 is. Pretty cool huh. I guess cars have come a long way since then lol.

I'm pretty sure bank 2 is going to be the right, or passengers, side. And sensor 1 means upstream, or before the catalytic convertor.

I looked in my Haynes manual, and it said downstream. Replaced it and the light went off. I'm happy!
