Default Fuel Capacity?

Hey,

I didn't know where exactly to post this at, so I put it here.

Question:

I have an 03 Ext Cab FX4 Ranger and according to the owners manual posted here on the forum for an 03, it says that the fuel tank is 19.5 Gallons.

Now when I filled it up the very first time, it was on empty (the check gauges was light was on - low fuel). When I filled up it only took 15.59 gallons (or right around there).

So is the book wrong or is that right?

Thanks, Zac.

That makes me feel better then. I know that all of them when the light comes on, you have so many gallons to find fuel.

So roughly each quarter of gas is close to 3.875 gallons minus the 4 gallon reserve so to speak.

I was panicing about the gas mileage but really it isn't that bad when you think about it. If the tank is 15.5 plus 4 reserve (in which case I try not to hit the low fuel light), for the amount of driving I do and the cost of lets say a $4 a tank at 15.5 gallons is $62.

If I can get the 20-22 range that Eagle said driving decent and keeping my speed at no faster than 60 on the hwy, I can live with that!!

It been a real long time since I had a truck (my old one only got about 18 on its best days) and I keep forgetting that I don't have my 30 mpg Mustang anymore.

Thanks for the replies guys, Zac.

Ok, then why on empty (I was on the red line pretty good), did it only take 15.59 gallons?

When I turned the truck back on, I had a full tank.

the gauge isn't really accurate i wouldn't judge gallons on that and i doubt it was on red. i have been on read and take 18.89 gallon to fill up.

point is drive. fill up when you have a quarter tank left. miles drive is divided by gallons put in

Thanks Eagle.

That is kind of what I figured, I know that my Mustangs gas gauge stunk. One time I would fill up at a half of tank and it would take 6 gallons exactly and the next time is was 7-8 gallons.

So either way, I just need to watch my driving and keep it under 60 and it won't be too bad.

All vehicles have a "reserve" so to speak to minimize people running out of gas on the highway. So the gauge reads high when reading empty as a result. It's been quite some time since I've owned a vehicle that was actually empty when the gauge said it was empty. I think my 1982 Toyota Celica was the last one that did. I pushed it to far once and ran out of gas. Thankfully, I was close enough to walk the rest of the way to work. I never let that happen again.

I'm pretty certain there's a few articles in the owner's manual that talk about the tanks reserve. I know even when I let it go really low it still won't take anywhere close to the capacity of the tank.
