Default Temp. needle drops after turning off heater fan

My ranger has been sitting for awhile and I am getting it back on the road. I am having issues with the heat, but it seems to be coming back slowly. I have a weird problem. Heat comes out of the vents (lightly) when the fan is off, when I turn the fan on heat comes out for a little while then starts to turn cold. When I turn the fan off I noticed that the temperature gauge drops from the middle to just above "C". Then it slowly builds back up to half way again.

I have replaced the thermostat and the radiator (not because of this, just because it was rusted and leaking) and have new anti-freeze. The coolant level is correct and there are no air bubbles.

Anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Maybe a bad heater core? I'm not sure. Or maybe it's going out sounds like it may be clogged

Yeah there are issues with the core (I think).

What I am wondering is why the engine temperature needle drops when I turn the heater fan off??

Please run through my NO HEAT TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE thread (Link below and in my sig). It will lead to you exactly where the problem is and you can fix it without guessing and replacing random parts. I don't think "these trucks are known for their cores". They don't fail or clog any more or less than any other vehicle on the road. It could be the core. And it could be numerous other things.
