Mission complete, for those interested.
Finished early last week- ended up putting in two straight days of work on the thing. Definitely not an experience I want to repeat anythime soon, but I learned a whole lot. Thanks to everyone here for the diagnosis and pointing me in the right direction. And of course the uhh... words of encouragement.
