I dont think we have an answer data base but we could start one. For instance recently my 83 ranger has had fits in the 2.8 (knocking banging smoking weak etc.) and i have been doing a lot of learning about what i have and what can work. The 2.8 2.9 and 4.0 all have the same bell housing bolt pattern and are the cologne model from cologne germany with gear drive timing. this helped me decide to swap the 4.0 i found in a 92 into mine because of the 100 bucks i bought it for and the ease of install. Also learned that my fuel tank can be used with an electric pump in it by putting it in place of my sending unit, although the fuel gauge wont work any more. Also from what i have found is the mazda transmission was the strongest to work with in the 5 speeds. Of coarse when i finish i will post again to let every one know how it goes. Remember this truck is a street driven trail rig that currently runs the stock 7.5 rear and dana 28 ttb with 3.73's. the rear has about 4 pds of weld in it and is holding up fine. This is an extremely low budget rig and since i have bought it i have about 730 750 in it. that counts the plates, metal i used for the custom bumber and floor boards lol, 3" body lift and a set of 33's. as well as the motor just purchased. Maybe when i'm done with the swap it will have enough power to break the front so i can do the solid axle swap, oh yeah those are in the 750 too.

pulled fuel tank and sending unit. It looks like the new complete assymbly from the autoparts store has a float for the fuel gauge maybe this unit will fit right in my tank and i will have the gauge still work as well as the pump for my efi swap. will update later.
