Cool Steering shaft loosness

I just bought a 2002 ford ranger 4.0 liter v6 and the steering is loose. the wheel moves 3 inches from center both ways with out changing the direction the truck is traveling. the whole shaft spins when i turn the wheel up until a point in the engine bay where there is a flange where it looks like 2 shafts meet.its right after where it comes through the fire wall. i need help figuring what needs repaired/replaced and maybe a link to the part or any input at all on what the problem may be.thanks for any and all help. i want to try to get this fixed before it goes in for inspection ill upload pics tomorrow

You will need new steering U joints. It's the device that looks like a hinge typed part that connects the colum with the other steering components and you can find them around or near your exhaust manifold. I eneded up getting mine replaced earlier this year when the redone the front suspension on my truck. Eventually they wear out and need to get replaced.

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the other steering components as well. Mine just needed the steering U joints.
