Fuel Issue - 1998 Ford Ranger
So I just got this truck. It's a 98 Ford Ranger 4x4. Has 117,000 miles clean as can be. 3.0L. So here's the deal.
Guy I bought it from had it stall out on him in a drive thru. He took it in, was quoted approx. $1000 bucks to reapir. The fuel pump went bad or so they thought. I bought it from him for real cheap ($1000) thinking I'd just do the pump and away I go.
Anyway, opted for the rebuild kit, dropped the tank (PITA!!!) and rebuilt the pump - still the same problem. Pumpin 15 PSI through the lines. I have spark, I hear the pump - what else could it be??? Haven't replace teh fuel filter cause it's also being a pain. Could that be the problem or is there a sensor/regulator that could be the deal?

look at the hose in the tank, you have a returnless fuel system, the pump will pump 72psi in the line and the unused fuel will go right back into the tank never coming out of the tank. sound like the hose has a hole in it

Ford Ranger
Are you speaking of the flex hose or the rubber hoses that are part of the fuel pump. Either way, it looks like I'm pulling the tank down again. But that's a good thought. It seems unrealistic that the filter would just get clogged but I've read some good thoughts on how to get that off as well.

15 psi in any fuel injected engine is to low sounding to me. A diesel lift pump, (that is not the pump that sends fuel to the injectors, the lift pump pulls fuel from the tank to the injection pump) pulls anywhere from 30 to 45 psi in my experience. And I'm pretty sure on the Ranger the pump should be pulling 30 psi up to the injectors.

Fuel issues
15 PSI is way low. The mechanic where the car was taken to said it should be in the 60-80 range. Seems high but whatever. Once the rain lets up, I'll crawl back under there and see what's up. At least it will be easier the second time around...

My best guess is that the pump may just be to far gone or you have an air leak some where in the line. Or I've seen this on hydraulic systems, the breather could be clogged up not allowing the pump to pull enough vacuum to pull up the fuel.

98+ Rangers should be around 65 PSI at the rail. If you haven't changed the fuel filter yet, it would make more sense to do that first before you pull the tank unit again.

That's true, I read it wrong and thought he had. They are a pain to change but all you need is one of the universal ac/fuel line kits you can get for 8 or 9 bucks at a parts store. I don't remember the size but they come in a whole set that should work. Make sure you drain the pressure off the fuel line before you take the filter out. I had a lot of fun with that one the first time and I didn't think about it. I whacked my head trying to get out of the way and I was tasting it all day, it was funny...later to me, but really funny to everyone else lol.

Eh I didn't look, I could have. But I didn't. Next time I'll look. I just want to know if he got it fixed or not yet.

Fuel Issue
So, a couple developments.
Changed the fuel filter. No change is PSI. I talked to some people who suggested the fuel pressure regulator (might go by another name) that is a part of the fuel pump assembly is the issue. I tend to agree and have ordered a whole new assembly to give a go.
BTW, forget the tool to remove the fuel filter. I cut a sharpie cap down to about an inch and a half, put a slit in it and slid it on. 2 minutes had that SOB off and saved myself $10 and alot of cursin.

Fuel Issues
You know, I thought about that. Looks like 4 torque bolts and maybe the harness but it actually wasn't difficult as much as annoying to drop the tank. If I had a second hand to guide the filler hose, maybe 15 minutes tops to drop the tank.

I haven't pulled a Ranger bed off, I have pulled other truck beds off but from experience either way is easy between removing the tank or the bed, the big thing is if you have a full tank of fuel. And as for pulling the bed you have to have somewhere to put it while you are doing whatever and a friend or 2 to get the bed off if you don't have a lift.
