how much does a shop charge for a fuel pump replacement?

My truck starts on second try every morning. I think my fuel pump is going bad and Ive read it is not the easiest thing to do. Does anyone happen to know how much a shop charges?

around $1000 i've heard.

do it yourself, it's easier than you've read. i just did mine a month ago. remove the bed, disconnect the wires/hoses, undo the locking retainer ring, pull the pump out. replace, tighten the locking ring, re connect the wires and hoses, then put the bed on.

took me an hour total, but i also washed a lot of mud off the top of my gas tank before pulling the pump out, and waited for it to dry

I did a little more reading into it, I will probably just get my buddy and tackle it one weekend. What did you use to remove the locking ring?

to remove the locking ring you can see if your autoparts store has a tool that is designed for it that you can rent or carefully tap it with a screwdriver until you can lift it out..... but if you choose the scredriver route be careful not to break any of the tabs off.....

When I was 15 years old it cost 500 plus parts for a 86 cougar fuel pump to be replaced.

I would suggest looking into doing it yourself. We replaced my sister in laws in her mustang. Took 1.5 hour

Hardest part was pulling the tank down. Ur lucky u can remove the be and access it easy.

Disconnect the fuel supply and return line push-connect fittings, the vapor tube and fill tube vent hose fittings at the fuel pump

I read that some guy got a strap wrench, I think thats what you call them anyway. I might try that if my parts store doesnt have the tool.

anyone know how heavy the bed is? and is the brake light wires the only wires I have to worry about when I pull off the bed? I havent looked up under the bed to see all of what im playing with yet. lol

you would have to unbolt the filler neck from the bed and unhook the brake light wiring and the bed bolts and i think that is all....

The filler neck is a rubber hose that connects where your gas cap goes to the top of the gas tank.

I replaced my fuel pump almost 3 years ago and it cost me $336 at Oreillys and I put it in myself. Mine was a little more than a regular fuel pump because mine is flex fuel.

I found this thread bcuz I need to replace my fuel pump in my 98 ranger. But I can't find the bolts that attach the bed to the frame. I found them underneath the truck but there isn't a way to get to the heads of them. My truck has a pendaliner installed on it. Do I have to take that off to reach the torx bolts? Thanks in Advance for any help.

Yes you have to take the liner off. Its not bolted to the bed I'm sure.
