Default '02 4.0 XLT towing capacity

I have read the most recent threads about towing with our Ranger. The owners manual states that it will tow up to 5600 lbs. We are looking at a camper that weighs about 3600 dry. I would estimate it would be about 4000 fully loaded, about a 400 lb toungue weight which is under the max in the manual, but as heavy as I would want to go. We live on the West coast and would be pulling some hills at times. I saw the picture someone posted with the poor Ranger with it's butt dragging the ground with a large trailer. Anyone know the realistic towing capacity for the 4.0? What would it take to make our Ranger pull a trailer this size?

Thanks!!

mthille

As far as I know, the towing limit is what is listed in the owners manual. I think the problem with the driver in the picture you are talking about is the toungue weight was WAY over limit. Keep everything in check and you should be fine.

Also, make sure your trailer has brakes. This is the most important thing

whatever you do, use a class III receiver hitch (if you don't already have one)

thats right, the ranger you saw I believe was the 2.3L Xl version which has coils instead of torsion bars which would prob explain the sag you saw.

Thanks for the input everyone. Dealer wanted too much for the trailer (surprise!) so we are still looking.
