Default Air intake sensor

Hi I'm the new guy, I have a 1998 Ford Ranger and someone or a "Motorhead" told me the reason my truck will not idle or run right is because of the Air intake sensor is bad. My ? is, is there a difference between a mass air intake and a iat sensor ? which one is considered the Air intake sensor ? And is the mass air intake a sensor or something compleatley different ? Which one would make the truck run like s_ _t ?

the MAF can cause the truck to run like absolute shit if it is bad/dirty and it is on the intake tube by the airbox

So most likley it's the Mass Air flow intake and not the iat sensor that's causeing the problems ?

The MAF is used to compute air flow rate. The IAT is used to compute air temperature. Both are critical to proper running. On newer rangers, the IAT is built into the MAF. On older models, the IAT is its own sensor up by the throttle body.

The IAC (Idle Air Control) regulates the idle air flow since the throttle plate is closed. If this is faulty, it will also screw up the idle.

And if the EGR is stuck wide open, that will totally hose your idle, but it would probably trip the check engine light if that was the case.
