Default AC stays on

My AC stays on even when AC, Max AC or defrost is not selected. The dealer tells me that this is normal except when only panel or only floor is selected and the outside temp is greater than 6 deg C. I don't have climate control.

No vehicle I have ever owned has done this. Is this normal or are they giving me a line? It sounds like a waste of fuel if it runs when I don't want it on.

With my ranger, this is normal as with most rangers. The AC is on with all settings except only panel and only floor and off. Its just the way things go with rangers and is normal. I agree with the waste of fuel if you dont want it on but just keep it on panel, floor, or off and you should be fine.

I actually have noticed better fuel mileage with the A/C on as it won't let the engine rev over 3000 to protect the compressor (I've got a 5sp and a heavy foot). I average 23mpg with A/C 20-21 without. If you want to change the way ford does it you could take apart your air control panel and install a switch so you can control it. ie have the defrost or face/feet on without the a/c. (did this a last year).

I have an automatic and try not to let the RPMs get over 3K anyways to save fuel, i wonder if having the AC on would make my mileage go down or if i would virtually get the same?
