Default speedometer jumping at high speeds help

hey guys quick question ( i hope)

my speedometer jumps starting at about 50-55 mph and jumps up form there and then back down.

and i hear a clicking noise from behind the cluster/dash area while driving.

it seems when i hit the gas the needle doesnt jump as much but when i let off it jumps all over the place.

i'v heard it could be the cable/ or the gear on teh end of the cable

or could my speedometer be toast and thts why i hear the clicking noise??

thanks in advance any ideas would be great

Most likely a dry, kinked or otherwise damaged cable. You could try lubing it but don't overdo it or the lubricant will migrate into the cluster.

Also could be a problem with the small plastic gear where the cable/speed sensor plugs into the transmission.

Possibly the speedometer itself but I would keep that at the bottom of the list.
