Default Leaking Gas Tank-HELP!

Hye guys for the last 2-3 weeks ive been smelling gas whenever i drive. My friend mentioned to me the other day while we were driving he looked at the top of the gas tank and saw that it was wet. Knowing this at 11 pm we grabbed a flash light and i had him start the truck while i watched what little of the tank i could see mostly the part towards the drivers seat from above. While running the top of the tank slowly began to get wet and i saw little spots appear from fuel splattering. Ok so now i know it leaks but from where? Is it the line going the engine is leaking from the pressure or is it the return line? Also what most likely needs replacement? Ive checked the pressure and its good so the pump is fine. Has anyone ever looked at the top of a ranger fuel tank? post pics? I just want to know so when i pull the bed off i can fix it fast. Any help greatly needed thanks guys!

It could be the return line leaking if you have normal pressure in the engine bay.

new question is it easier to drop the fuel tank to see the top of it to see which line is leaking or is it easier to remove the bed????

How old is the truck? That would determine if pulling the bed would be easier or not. Guessing by the symptom, I'm going to say it has a few years on it and that pulling the bed would be easier. But weird things happen, thus the question.

Based on what my '98 looks like under the bed, I would pull the bed then. Spray some PB Blaster on the bed bolts and let them soak over night before trying to pull them. That and a few buddies to help lift the bed. If you drop the tank, you'll more than likely need to replace the straps.

just remove the bed it makes it simpler.

you cannot leave things hooked up if the tank is dropped the lines woud snap or bend

Hmmm... good question. I don't know if there is enough give in the lines for that or not. There should be some though just for installation purposes. Maybe if you drop it just enough to get a better look and set it on some blocks or something for support.

I'll look in my Haynes manual and see if there is anything that can help.

EDIT: For fuel tank removal, the manual says all the lines must be disconnected before dropping the tank. So it looks like pulling the bed is the way to go for what you want to do.

1993 Ranger.Do you feel lucky? You will have to be ,because if the retaining ring for the fuel pump/float is rusted out-it's still available.
However,as in my case-if the tank has split even just a little on the seams, you need a tank.

Nobody has them.Nobody.1993 tanks were obsoleted long ago.No dealer stock exists.
Sad.That goes all the way to 1997 for some reason.Blue Oval Logic, maybe.

SO I'm hoping it IS a pump connection for you.But .95% of those leakers were in the seams.

i believe it is a pump connection because it leaks whenever the truck is running and doesnt when its not. also if i remove the bed is it just the six bolts, filler hose and taillight wiring and the bed comes off?
