Kansas just raised some of their speed limits to 75 and while trying it out thie weekend I found my speedometer starts jumping back/forth several mph above 78 or so (speed shown on speedometer and also GPS) and causes the cruise control to really surge (up above 90 then down to 75, etc) Searching these forums I thought I might try changing the speed sensor just for grins as it is only $20 or so. For my 2001 it seems it should be on the automatic transmission tailshaft area (2WD) but I can't seem to locate it. Have found the one on the rear differential housing, but that is the antilock sensor isn't it? My eyes aren't great anymore at my age, especially crawling around under my truck. This was built 11/99 a 2000 model XLT 2 dr extended cab long bed 2wd. Thanks! Cliff

Sounds like the spedo head... I had a 2000 explorer that had the same problem.

Would the head cause the cruise to react? I figured the speed sensor signal went to the computer and then was sent separately to the speedo and cruise. Wrong?

I dont know if its wrong? I just know my spedo would jump around and dealership fixed it and said the spedo head went bad. Anything is possible.

You're right on the anything, thanks for the observation. Have sorta wanted to change clusters to one with a tach so maybe this will be my excuse.

Okay, decided to change the speed sensor (2000 Ranger 2wd only has one, on the rear differential, in 2001 they went to sensor with a gear on the transmission for the speedometer, but the 2000 just uses the rear ABS sensor) Bought one from O'Reilly (they recommended the Borg Warner for $21 w/tax, made in Taiwan) installed, test drive and it was worse than the original, starting to jump at around 65-70. Took it back for refund and then bought one from NAPA (same price almost) test drive and it is a little better than the original, doesn't start jumping until just about 85, holds good at 82 on cruise and that is the fastest (usually only 80-81) in 75 mph speed zones so that will work. (of course when Kansas originally opened our then new turnpike in the 50's it had an 80 mph speed limit and a lot of blown engines.) Cliff
