Default gas tank problems...I think

hi everyone, I am at a loss, I have a 98 ranger, 4.0l engine. I have been dealing with a check engine/rough ride for a while now, changing all sensors, the catalytic converter ( which helped a lot) cleaning the airflow sensor with great care, usual tune up stuff etc... But I realized this week end, that after having had to break hard to avoid a car who stopped abruptly before me, that the truck ran really rough for for the next 100 or so miles, and then back to just somewhat rough...I am wondering if that may indicate something like dirt in the tank, and gas not getting somewhere? I have changed he fuel filter. How is the tank configured, and is it hard to take out to clean? ..any thoughts? I am getting desperate...thanks
