Default problems with brakes-please help

I have a 2003 FX4. something broke in the back brakes. I took to repair shop and they replaced all the springs/whatever (they did not replace the shoes), and the ebrake cable. ever since then my back brakes lock up when i hit them going slow. plus the truck rattled and shook like crazy.

I took the truck back in and they said the brakes were fine, the spare tire was loose (thats why it shook), the front roters were shot.

I replaced the front rotors and pads, also replaced passenger side wheel bearing. also tightend up spare tire.

my truck still shakes (alot less, but does shake) when braking and the back brakes lock the second i touch them when going slow.

any and all help please!!!

thanks

When you took it back for the problem did they pull when wheel and drum off to inspect?

I would pull the wheel and drum off and inspect all the springs and self adjuster.
I've seen a self adjuster cable come loose before and get wedged between the shoe and drum. The fix was a new spring kit.

Take it back again.

If you can do discs, you can do drums too.

Dads gfs ranger's doing the same thing...it'll lock up when going slow but not at a decent speed. I've narrowed it down to a proportioning valve...Try that...should be where your problem lies.

My bro-in-law said the same thing! Any clue how/where to fix/replace?
I have the chiltons manual, I'll look it up.

I don't know if the repair shop pulled everything off....they did replace all the springs/ cable. When I took it back the second time, the owner checked everything (I think he was worried his guys might have made a mistake).

thanks for the confidence in me doing the back brakes!! the fronts were easy except for me having to beat the rusted rotors!! same with the wheel bearing. just a pain to get the bolts out.

thanks to everybody!!

Any idea which part is the porportioning valve? My chiltons manual doesn't go into enough detail?

also, what years are compatable with my 2003? so when i start calling junk yards, i can ask .

thanks for all the help!!

no, my brakes lock up when going slow to a stop.

If I'm driving 65 mph and come up to a light, as soon as i apply pressure to the brakes, the truck starts to shake (feels like its coming from the back end / almost like the bed is shaking). then, when I get close to coming to a complete stop ( maybe 5 mph at the most), the back brakes lock up and skid / chirp repeatidly.

It seems like the back brakes want to lock up no matter what speed I'm going, but since the truck is moving to fast, it can't happen.

any and all help / suggestions welcome!!!

thanks!!

Drive it at about 25- 30 m.p.h. With the e brake release handle pulled out SLOWLY apply the e brake. if the shaking occurs then your rear drums are out of round. If so have them machined or buy new ones. Do not fully apply e brake when doing this as you might lock the rear brakes and lose control. If the drums are the problem, I would replace the shoes too. Do one side at a time that way if you can`t figure out how parts go back, you can look at the other side and see. Ford drum brakes are really easy to do.
