Default AC/Heater Issues

'96 Ranger - I can switch between AC and heat fine, but it won't blow out where I want it to. It generally blows out the defroster. Sometimes it will switch to the dash when I turn the truck off and restart it. Any ideas?

Two totally different issues.

You have a vacuum leak. A big one. The damper that directs the air flow is vacuum operated with a sprint that will "fail" to full defrost with no vacuum applied. There is a vacuum reservoir under the hood, a strange orb/sphere looking thing. I would start there and look around from there.

You have a burned out fan speed resistor pack. The resistor pack has resistors for speeds 1, 2, and 3. High speed is direct so there is no resistor. This will be a black box with 4 wires going into it right at the blower motor under the hood. Common failure. Cheap replacement.
