Default 3000 rpm cut out

My 3.0 2003 Ranger cuts out (sounds like rev limiter) at 3000 rpm when in neutral and revving up. It doesn't do this under power. I previously replaced the CPS and spark plugs. The CEL went out and now there are no codes, but this problem persists. Could it be the MAF?

I believe it's designed that way.

ford designed it so idiots wouldn't blow up the engine by revving it up, trying to look "cool"

Automatics only, Rangers with manual don't have a rev limiter. Oddly, my old 97 Taurus had a rev limiter around 4K.

BUT GUYS, I was driving down the hwy when this ranger started lurching, cutting out, it is an automatic 4 l. I took in in this am and it ran fine, mechanic could find nothing wrong.

----------

Now running fine. I guess a glitch in the computer. will wait and see if problem returns. Thank you all for your replys.

Speed limiter maybe? Were you possibly going 90+ MPH?

What on earth does this have to do with an idle RPM limiter?????????

The computers don't generally glitch. They don't run windows. It's embedded firmware. More than likely the user glitched. Sounds like you were bouncing off the 95mph speed limiter.
