Default $1000 for Ford to change my fuel pump. Seriously?

I know I'm probably going to get told that I should have used the search function, sorry. I would if I wasn't in Afghanistan and my internet wasn't really super slow. I've been snooping around as fast as I can and till now haven't really had a reason to join. I just liked to read and learn. Anyways....

The fuel pump on my truck went out and the dealership wants $1000 to change the fuel pump. Is this reasonable or should I go somewhere else to have it done? I've never heard of it costing this much to change a fuel pump. They say its because they have to take the bed off to get the the pump, which I know you can do but $1000? I would normally just do it myself but I can't really do that being on the other side of the world and I can't just let it set till I get home, then I'd probably have more problems then I do now. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Honestly, that sounds about right dealer priced that I have seen. I'd take it to a local shop since I'm guessing the truck is not under warranty. It'd probably be far less. I'd see if you can get a buddy to do it. Hell if I had more time, you're truck I am assuming is in Kentucky, I'd grab a couple guys and run up to Kentucky and do it for you. There won't be any major issues if it sits till you get back other then the fuel might go bad, and it probably won't start for awhile, if at all.

BTW welcome to FRF, and thank you for your service

Alldata gives a labor quote of 2 hours which doesn't include draining and refilling the tank. Diagnosis is given .7 hours.
I know the part itself costs around 400 for the complete aperture.
$150 for the rebuild kit.

thats pretty steep. they arent that hard to replace. i looked up ur fuel pump on advanceauto and the whole assembly is $209. thats ridiculous if they are charging almost 4 times that in labor to replace it. id dot it ur self and save an extra $800ish.

You can drop the tank too, but taking off the bed is seems like the easier method. I dropped the tank when I changed mine. Simple to do, just hard to get back in.

Bed is stupid easy to take off if you have air tools and not too terrible without them.

If you need to do other maintance on the truck like, brake lines, front shackle mount, etc. I would drop the tank. While out por-15 all up on that side, run a new brake line just so its done, they will fail eventually. But a grand for that job, to high.

I talked to my car guy before doing it, and he said drop the tank, so I did. Shoulda took the bed off. I'd deff just let it wait til you get back.

Hell even breaking the bit, and running to the parts store we took Corum's off in what? an hour and a half total to do the fuel pump swap? I think total with a new socket it was something like a little over 200 bucks?

Alright. Thanks guys for all the answers so fast. My dad has my truck now and I'm sure he won't want to have to get it towed again but if it saves some money, then its worth it. After he told me that I was planning on getting it taken somewhere else to do it, I just wanted to see if that was the norm and if it would even be worth it to get it towed to another shop in town.

Yes. $1000 is to much to pay. I just paid $485 at a local (and honest) shop. Price included fuel pump and new fuel filter etc. Dealers basically suck.
