Default Vaccum system - what is that black ball called ???

im having what appears to be a somewhat common problem with the Ranger.

Air ONLY blows out defroster vents no matter where I set the dial.

After doing some reading here I started to check the vaccum system.

What I found was the small black ball "thing" with a line going in and (i assume) out, that is SUPPOSED the be mounted somewere? is just laying in my engine compartment.

No kinked lines.. but when I pull the lines from the ball "thing" .. one at a time.. I find that one hose has vaccum and the other.. nothing. in other words there is vaccum going in to the ball.. but none coming out.

First = can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be vaccum coming out this thing??? or should both lines be "vaccuming"??

Second = where is this "thing" supposed to mount ??? I cant find ANYWHERE that looks like where it came from (a pic would help)

Third = is it possible for this "thing" to go bad??? if so.. does anyone know what its called??

thanks

yes that thing is suppose to have vacuum and controls the vents or has something to do with it. It is suppose to be mounted on the fender skirt. If its just flopping around, perhaps the insides (valves or whatever) have flopped into the opening, shutting down the vacuum

several things. vacuum reservoir, vacuum ball. It is located under the passenger side fender.

Mine was shattered when i hit a tree and I had to replace it because, like yours, my air was stuck on defrost. I searched for days trying to find an aftermarket source, I finally bought one from a memeber of the forum. there are two hoses going into the ball, the ball provides a seal and pressure, if cracked, your air is stuck on defrost

Thanks for replies and pic (helped ALOT).. after i concluded that for whatever reason someone had been messing with the "thing".. i had a thought what if whoever was messing with it unplugged it and reveresed the hoses ???? well after i switched them around. BAM !!!
I can now divert the air to all the different places it should go.. now if I can get the A/C compressor clutch to engage it might blow something besides hot air.

thanks again for replies and pic...

I've always wondered what that thing was! My friend and I have affectionately nicknamed it Sputnik!
