Default 88 Ranger fuel gauge sending unit?

I have a 88 Ranger, V6, everything stock. The problem I'm having is the fuel gauge. It seems to "work" for the most part, but when it reads empty and I go to fill it up, all it takes is about 5-6 gallons and it reads full? The fuel gauge goes up and down, and I understand that due to inclines, the gauge will move accordingly. But I'm just wondering why the fuel gauge moves according to only about 5-6 gallons of gas? Is there a problem with the float? Maybe the arm that connects to the float is "out of whack"?
