Default prerunner?

Ok so i want a prerunner ranger. I am not sure if it is better to build one myself or to buy one already built. I just am thinkin its cheaper to buy one already done but im not sure. I also want one that is gonna get decent gas milage i know a prerunner isnt gonna get great but id like at least 17 out of it. I will use it for actually goin off roading so it needs to be strong. I wanna do headers and new exhaust new intake new fenders wide wheels and have them spaced out. i would like some nice travel on it. gonna put new bumper and skid plate on it and a light rack on top too probably. i really want it to be bad ass and functional. Also what years are best? what engines? i will get a manual for sure. So what you guys think?

Oh and i would be doing all the work myself.

Good luck with getting 17mpg

My lifted 03 edge gets around 10-12 MPG
I have a 3" spindle lift and a little torsion crank
I had 31s on it before, and now I have 33x12.50s and the tires didn't
Make a difference in mileage

U can do a mid travel kit that wouldn't be too expensive. Just look for used kits. I have 35" tires on my 4.0 and I have some shitty gas miliege.

I don't even want to know what I get. All I know is it's terrible. Once I buy another commuter car then I'll figure out what I get.

get a 97 or older ranger with beams. it is way easier (cheaper) to get decent amounts of travel out of simple bolt on parts. the 4.0 is the obvious best choice, but the manual transmissions in those things love to blow up when they're used in the desert. buying a pre-built truck will be cheaper in the long run, especially in this economy. you can probably pick up a decently built truck for a little bit more than the price of the suspension alone if you're patient.

i have an 05 with a 3.0, and i'm running 33x12.5 tires with 4.10 gears. i get around 17-18mpg on the freeway, but i do my best to cruise right at 65 or slower if i hit a hill.

for better info on desert trucks, check out dezertrangers.com, there is a lot of info if you SEARCH for it. not many people on this site are into the speed aspect of off roading, they mostly seem to like mud and crawling (not that it's a bad thing).

You can do it. People can cut and turn or extend ttb just like regular beams. And on the rangers its very simple to update your truck from an older front end to the 2005+ style

What's the rough pricing for doing everything to make a good looking prerunner from back to front on a 2wd? I'm considering to this to my truck it's a 93

too many factors to estimate. anywhere from $5k to $50k, depends on how you want it built.
