Default A/C VS MAX A/C wuts the difference:

2010 4 cyl ranger stick shift w/reverse.

A/C VS MAX A/C wuts the difference:

Which one will cause engine to drink more gasoline or it doesn't matter.

If the FAN is on high does it waste more gas versus on lowest setting or makes no difference?

All positions except Max AC use fresh air ducted in from the outside. Thats what those vents are in front of the windshield. Max AC switches the damper to close the outside intake and sucks air in from inside the cabin under the dash. So it recirculates inside air. This will make the AC system more efficient and theoretically reduce duty cycle off the compressor. Which will theoretically save on engine load and fuel.

The Max AC setting and Off setting also closes the hot water valve to the heater core. This will not change anything unless you try to turn the temperature knob up. It will do nothing.

The fan motor speed settings will not have any effect on the engine load or fuel efficiency.

Edit... Patrick, it doesn't keep the compressor running or effect the fan speed. The compressor duty cycle is controlled strictly by pressure and the system would explode if it did that. The fan just sounds louder because the interior intake is opened allowing you to hear air being sucked in. It doesn't run any faster.

Max AC will also recirculate air in the cab, at least it does in most vehicles, so I am making the jump to say that it does the same on the Ranger.

That depends on where you are. I usually only put it on max AC if it is above 90, or extremely humid outside. I like fresh air. Or if I'm passing through northern new jersey, due to the aforementioned odor mitigation. Also, sometimes you want to apply a little bit of heat. it can get a little cold. Also, mixing some heat in can help keep the windows from condensating.

Yeah, I just recently learned that Recirculate + A/C = Max A/C.
