Dead
Howdy, hey I disconnected my battery for a few days on my 2000 Ranger 3.0 automatic ext cab. Now with the battery back in, the truck is dead as a door nail. With the key in the start position all the cluster lights come on, but it makes NO effort to crank up the engine. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks...TIM

Re: Dead
Do you have any corrosion on the battery connections, or the cables leading up to the connections? My truck did the same thing, and I had to cut out about 3 inches of the cables, and put new ends on. How old is the battery? This could also be an issue. It could have enough juice to power on the lights, but not enough to crank the starter. Is the truck a stick? If so, try push starting it. You could also try jump starting it. We need a bit more info for a correct diagnosis.

Re: Dead
Hi, there is no corrosion on battery, it is only 6 months old and a very good battery The cables and connections are like new. This is an auto trans. Tried to jump start it got no where with that. I think it needs whatever it is that makes the starter kick in to do its job (solinoid?) Or even worse an electrical problem with the wiring down there...TIM

Re: Dead
If your battery is a non gel type,
pop open your fill caps and check your battery Acid level
You can also use Distilled water and Fill to the top if low

Re: Dead
Hey everyone thanks for your input. The battery checks out fine as do the bat. cables. I have tried to jump start it. When I try to start it up I do hear a click coming from the lower dash area on the passenger side. Somebody asked me about that but I can't find his email message now. I do hear a click though, when I disengage the key from starting it. It did this once before but a few hours later it started right up. Now nothing but a click...TIM

Re: Dead
sounds like your starter, i believe its on the passenger side of the motor so it would click from that area of the cab. take it out and bring it into a parts store that tests them for free.

Re: Alive and kickin'
A thought crossed my mind and I used my spare key and the dam thing started right up and continues to run just fine. Something must be wrong with that key that won't start it. Thanks to all for your replies

Good to hear, the dealer reprograms those keys if you need that done but i don't know how much it would cost
