Default Engine will not turn over.

Hey all, new to the site and looking to see if anyone can help me out.

I have a fairly new battery in my truck, (July of last year) and yesterday she decided she didn't want to start up for some reason.

I turn the key on and you can hear a click like the starter is trying to engage, but it won't turn over. I was able to jump it twice yesterday to get her started, the first time I drove around for about 45 minutes to try and charge the battery, but as soon as I turned her off same thing: CLICK! Was able to jump again and started fine.

This morning I tried to start the engine again and the same click, but this time not even jumping is starting her up.

Checked the voltage on the battery, it read 12.8v so the battery appears to be good. Thought it may be the starter or the alternator, but since I could jump he yesterday and not today leaves me lost on what could be wrong.

I am out of ideas and figured I would try here to see if anyone can help out. Thanks!

did you check for a voltage drop at all? check the positive post of the battery and the positive terminal connected to it with a voltmeter. you should read 0. do the same for the negative terminal and post.

Sounds like a problem with the cables or terminals. 12.8 is a good charge. So something is connected poorly somewhere if it still won't start, especially with jumper cables.

If it starts with cables, either the battery is bad, or the terminals are dirty and need cleaning. This can include the connection at the starter.

Its not uncommon for a battery to fail in a year or less. Most batteries are warranted for at least 2 years, and will offer a new battery at no charge. (no pun intended)

There is always the chance that the starter solenoid is failing, or the starter itself is going bad.

Most parts stores will test the system free of charge, if you can get ti there.

After replacing a starter, battery, alternator, started solenoid, all large gauge cables, and STILL getting a "click click click" I found the ground wire from the firewall to the back of the block was corroded and not getting enough ground to the starter. Fixed it, started fine.

CHeck ALL your grounds, EVERYWHERE. The starter is grounded through the block so if there's any bad ground it might not be able to conductively draw enough current to the unit itself even with a great battery fully charged.

Well, i tried to take the shortest route today. I returned the battery and was given a fresh one. Installed and connected it....and I am still not able to turn her over (I even disconnected the subwoofer amp so make sure that was not getting any voltage leak). I am still get the same clicking with no turnover. I am starting to think its either the grounding cable or the starter. Anymore thoughts from the group?

Have you checked any connections for corrosion? Voltage drop, etc? Could be the solenoid, could be bad connection/ground, starter......... Could be a few things. Did you check the terminals and posts for voltage drop? That's the easiest thing to check.

I have a 94 4.0 with the same problem. You turn the key and here one "click" and thats it? It only happens sometimes?

Sounds like your starter solenoid is sticking. Next time it happens, crawl under your truck with a wrench, mag light, tire iron, small hammer, rock, whatever and tap on the solenoid above your started a few times. Truck should start right up...

I checked a bunch of cables and grounds, checked my voltage..found no problems. Tapped the starter, fired right up. Try it before you go tracing all your cables, it takes just a few seconds.

Now that you know how to start it up, that will get you by till you drop $120ish on a new starter. Sometimes your truck may start normally without tapping on it, other times you will find yourself crawling under to tap on it...Replace it before you get caught with a truck that will not start in a bad rain storm!

Sounds like you've got an internally corroded solenoid. What the tapping did was knock out some of the crud that's built up inside; I'd say to replace just that, but alas, most parts stores will only replace the starter/starter solenoid as a complete unit.

Make sure the cheaper things are working right first such as starter and battery then you or have someone check the fuel pump. When mine started doing like that it was the fuel pump. About $600 at garage.
