Default Exhaust upgrade? want to keep fuel mileage up. :D

I am new to these forums, but have been on em a few times before lookin around.
I own a 2003 Ford Ranger FX4 LvL2 that is primarily stock.

I need to change my exhaust pretty soon, and want to do a cat back that sounds good, and am open to any outlet type.
I also want to maintain or boost my fuel mileage so i am not looking for a balls to the wall setup.

I cant seem to find a setup that I know will work (or atleast that i feel comfortable spending big dough on......without the security that yes it is the right stuff)

Any suggestions or any ideas for me on something you know works?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 2003 4.0L SOHC I intalled a K&N Cold air intake and Gibson catback duals (part number 9508) and it sounds awesome although I only picked up 1 mpg maybe. I'm contributing that to my attention to my driving habits rather than the mods. Anyway for the $500 spent the sound and apperance was worth it to me any performance upgrades are almost undetectable but I'm very happy with setup hope this helps take care.

I have duals on mine. It goes around the spare. In between the driver side shock and spare.

I have a magnaflow muffler.
I use to have the complete exhaust. Off a ford ranger thunderbolt which is duals. I took that muffler off and put on the magnaflow. Wife complained it was to loud. Magnaflow is a little quite.

the Gibson will definitly work around the spare it went on in about an hour I got through autoanything they had a special and I got it for 342 not terrible heartthrob also makes a cool system but the gibson was worth every penny for ease of intall sound and its designed to produce the most horsepower gain in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range daily driving range for my money there isnt a better system hope this helps
