Default Power Steering Pump Questions???

Hello, I am Mike J. in Maine, and I have been using/studying the site for a while, and now I want to jump in with my first real Ranger question for the group.
Well it is frost heave season in Maine, and the roads are pretty rough! I started hearing some clunking from the front end of my 2001 2wd Ranger, and crawled under for an inspection.
I found the sway bar links were both pretty shot, and one slightly bent, so I took the liberty to go get some new ones from Car Quest. $26 bucks and 1 hour later, it was starting to look a lot better. To access the opposite side and install the 2nd one, I turned the truck on and turned the wheel all the way until 'stop'. I shut the truck back off, and walked around the front to see fluid had leaked out from under the motor via the P/S pump area; exactly where? Not positively certain.
I finished the install of the 2nd link, and carefully drove the truck back into the yard from out of the garage. On the floor was maybe a 1/2-3/4 cup of fluid. While backing it out and turning the steering, it did the jugger, jugger, jugger thing; like the P/S fluid was low/out. Before I add any fluid...
QUESTION: Do I immediately assume the pump is shot, or is there a troubleshoot move you guys know to figure out if I need a high pressure hose, or some other aspect of the P/S mechanism without entirely replacing it?
I really appreciate any experience you are willing to share. I am pretty good at fixing the truck on my own, but don't really know where to start with these symptoms.
Being a Friday, I am reluctant to call a garage and start asking questions. I thought I would start here, as I have found some really great advice on this site while troubleshooting my Ranger issues.

Best,
Mike in Maine

it would help if you could determine where the leak is coming from. without any of us there to see it theres no way we could tell you whats leaking. just a though though, did you happen to turn the wheels with the steering wheel at all without the truck running while you were working on it?

A matter of fact, I did. Now you mention it, I would turn the key to unlock the ignition, on comes the radio, then turn the wheel. Yup!
What does that tell you?
Even if you did see the truck in its' present state, it kinda sprayed fluid around enough that it is hard to tell exactly where it came from. Thanks for anything you can offer!

well when you turn the steering wheel without the truck running alot of times it forces the power steering fluid out of the reservoir and it usually ends up all over the underside of the hood, battery and side of the engine. i bet if you look youll see the cap for the reservoir dislodged and loose. the reason the power steering acted funny at first was because all teh fliud had been forced out of the system, into the reservoir and then out the cap, it just takes a minute to get the fluid back into the system. just clean everything off, top off the fluid level and youll be good to go, no harm done, its just something these trucks do.
