Driver side rear brake locking up?!?!?!?
I'm new here so thanks in advance for any troubleshooting on this.
I have a '99 4x4, 3.0, 5spd, 7.5 rear end. Running 31" BFG's
This problem first surfaced last year but I don't drive my truck as much as I used to since I work across the street from where I live. However, when it does happen it is a pain in the behind.
I back out of my parking spot and there is no sticking in the brake. As soon as I try to move forward the brake locks and I can't move forward. I usually put it 4x4 (sometimes need to use 4Low) and once I can manage to get the wheel turning it frees up and I'm good.
On Sunday I drove to Keystone, had a great day on the mountain and left up without a problem - I did not set my parking brake when I parked, but I usually do. I go to the grocery store to get some food and as soon as I back out of my spot the rear wheel locks and 4x4 won't even pull through it (again I did not use the parking brake). I ended up backing up all the way through the lot and backed into a spot. Then I gave it hell in first gear it, pushed in clutch pedal to ease up, then gave it hell again. After 5 or 6 cycles of this it eventually came free, but with a fair amount of abusing the clutch. When I got home I backed up again, and again the drivers rear brake locked up. I put it in 4x4 and drove across the parking lot and I could see the drag line in the snow and it was just the rear driver side wheel that was dragging. I parked it and there it has sat.
It doesn't seem to make a difference if the parking brake is used or not. It almost seems like the self adjusting mechanism is going crazy on that drum. I haven't taken the wheel off yet to look at it.
Any ideas? I don't know drum brakes worth a crap so as much info as possible is great.
Thanks for your help!
