Default Driver side rear brake locking up?!?!?!?

Hi everyone!

I'm new here so thanks in advance for any troubleshooting on this.
I have a '99 4x4, 3.0, 5spd, 7.5 rear end. Running 31" BFG's

This problem first surfaced last year but I don't drive my truck as much as I used to since I work across the street from where I live. However, when it does happen it is a pain in the behind.

Problem:

I back out of my parking spot and there is no sticking in the brake. As soon as I try to move forward the brake locks and I can't move forward. I usually put it 4x4 (sometimes need to use 4Low) and once I can manage to get the wheel turning it frees up and I'm good.

On Sunday I drove to Keystone, had a great day on the mountain and left up without a problem - I did not set my parking brake when I parked, but I usually do. I go to the grocery store to get some food and as soon as I back out of my spot the rear wheel locks and 4x4 won't even pull through it (again I did not use the parking brake). I ended up backing up all the way through the lot and backed into a spot. Then I gave it hell in first gear it, pushed in clutch pedal to ease up, then gave it hell again. After 5 or 6 cycles of this it eventually came free, but with a fair amount of abusing the clutch. When I got home I backed up again, and again the drivers rear brake locked up. I put it in 4x4 and drove across the parking lot and I could see the drag line in the snow and it was just the rear driver side wheel that was dragging. I parked it and there it has sat.

It doesn't seem to make a difference if the parking brake is used or not. It almost seems like the self adjusting mechanism is going crazy on that drum. I haven't taken the wheel off yet to look at it.

Any ideas? I don't know drum brakes worth a crap so as much info as possible is great.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe the tab that controls the adjustment wheel is not functioning because of wear.

I know that rebuild kits are available for drum brakes. You might be better off just doin that instead of guessing. Check the wear on the drums as well.

Just a general tip: When you take the drum off you gotta back that adjustment wheel WAY down so that the ridge on the outside edge of the drum will clear the shoes.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll have time this Sunday to look at the drums.

FYI, I think it's been about 75,000 miles since the brake shoes were replaced. I would think if it was wear related then both wheels would be giving me a hard time.

the effects of long term wear and tear do not always occur symmetrically.
You might need both the self adjuster rebuild kit and the spring and hardware kit if something obvious doesn't hit you.
