Grinding sound when punching the gas?
Ok, this is going to be one of those "but it never happens for the mechanic" questions. In the last 5 days I have had this happen about 5 times now and I will try to explain it the best I can.
It first happened when I was turning to the left across two lanes into traffic and had to accelerate to get ahead of oncoming traffic. As I turned nothing happened, but as I was straightening out the turn and hit the gas I heard a loud, but very brief "grinding" noise and a little "jolt", almost as if something was trying to "kick in" or "un-stick" itself. At first I thought it had something to do with the fact that I was both turning AND accelerating, but then...the next two times was when I was accelerating from a dead stop after the light turned green. I was not turning, just going straight. The fourth time was when I was turning and accelerating and straightening out after the turn again and the last time, which was about 2 hours ago while running to the store, I heard and felt it again while accelerating out of a parking lot to get ahead of another car. Please bear in mind that it's not just when I normally accelerate...only when I have to punch it to get going faster.
So, long story short, it appears to only happen when I have to "punch" the gas and it only happens for a brief moment and then the truck runs for miles and miles just fine.
Any thoughts? U-joint perhaps? 4 wheel drive trying to engage without asking it to? Brakes sticking? ????

Re: Grinding sound when punching the gas?
Is it a really bad grinding sound or a little pinging noise because mine does that and the manual says it is normal

No, there's no shaking. It just makes a grinding noise and sort of "catches" for a brief second and then "releases" immediately. If that makes any sense. It didn't feel like a transmission problem (as in slipping gears) though. I've had a car with transmission problems before and it didn't feel anything like that, but I wasn't paying attention as to whether it was doing it right about the time it would be shifting or not so I can't be 100% sure either.

It's a really bad noise. Kind of feel it under me sort of loud grind (kind of like when you can feel the beat of the bass from your stereo sort of noise). Hell, I don't even know if "grinding" is the right way to describe it, but it's the best I can come up with.

Re: Grinding sound when punching the gas?
BUMP please
----------
Ok, I researched it and now know what l/s and rear locker is, but how do I check to see which I have?
----------
From everything I'm reading in other posts now it sounds very much like it may be that I have the l/s locked (rear locker) and when running on pavement like I am it's catching the one tire and causing me to feel the "release" because the other tire is attempting to "catch up", but would that also make the grinding noise I'm hearing?

wouldnt running your VIN at your local Dealer tell you if you have a lock on it, just a suggestion, it would be good for your knowledge and to add to your signature

I did a VIN decode and under "locking differential" it states: N/A. It was a nice idea though, just didn't give me any more information.

DUDEE...it means ur truck is awesome )))
okay 4.10 means u have the best gear provided by ford....perfect for running 33s and towing ur engien works less because of the gears....l/s does not mean its locked but yes u will always have l/s you have the 7 foot 5 inch axle..assuming cuz its a stepside (someone will need to explain that) 2750 is ur axle weight load bearing ratio....u shoulsdnt exceed ur trucks payload in the first place lol
