Default i have a 1996 ranger that wont go past 70 mph?

I just bought this truck. its a 5 speed but once i get it into 5th gear it wont go past 70 mph and starts making a loud ticking noise. any ideas?

motor?

if a 4cyl.....i'd suggest a good tune up

Can't make a guess based on the lack of info. Since the truck might be worth $1500 in working condition, replace it.

Time to pull the head and replace the valve train. If you know how to do it yourself, it would be a good project. If you are not mechanically inclined it wouldn't be cost effective to take it to a shop.
