Its the fan speed resistor pack. Its attached right next to the blower motor, little square looking box thing with wires going in and out. High speed is pass-through which is why it works. All other settings go through high currect resistors to reduce the voltage and therefore reduce the fan speed. Eventually, those resistor packs crap out. Easy bolt-on replacement from the dealer.

Question Re: Fan Speed-High Only

I just had a terrible time separating the resistor from the wiring, so much rust inside the connector. Now I have them separated , but there is a lot of rust on the inside of the connector on the metal tabs. What can I do about that issue? Pb blaster?

Ya, you can try to clean it. Or you can grab one from a junk yard and splice it in. But, at least now you see why it wasn't working...

If I'm going to spice one in , should I just buy a new one?

If you can find a decent one in a junk yard, go that route. The stealership will have them too. About $40 if I remember correctly. The wires aren't color coded though, so you will need to match wires from the old connector. Grease the crap out of the socket on the new resistor with dieelectric grease and RTV the back of the plug to keep moisture out. The whole resistor design and placement is the poorest set up I've ever seen in a vehicle.

I had the same problem. The biggest help was going on YouTube and watching a couple of videos on how to replace it. I got the old resistor out, but had problems separating the plug in. I had to get a new pigtail. They can be special ordered from AutoZone, (Santech Ford A/C blower motor resistor pigtail #MT0905) but my local Ford dealer had one in stock for $35.00 ( WPT-114 / 1U2Z-14S411-NA Wiring Pigtail) I have the package with the barcode if anyone needs the information.
If I knew how to insert photos in the message here, I'd put it online.
The A/C works fine now!

Also check the fan. Once you replace the resistor, start the vent on low speed. If the fan stats and blows air, the motor is OK. If it only blows on low AFTER it has been on high, the blower motor is bad and will overheat and burn up the resistor and strain the electrical system and cause the alternator to work harder (burn more gas).

Check junkyards for any newer Ranger/Mazda. The blower motors fit from all years so find the newest one as possible. Be sure and cut the wire and keep the connector off the junkyard blower in case your connector doesn't match the new blower. IF your connector doesn't fit the new blower, you can splice the wire and use the connector from the junkyard blower. I pulled a blower motor off a Mazda and just unplugged the blower and left the connector. Mine didn't match so I had to solder the connection or go back to the junkyard and get the connector.
