Default rear brake size, 9" or 10", how to tell?

so when browsing auto zones site tonight i discovered there is 2 options for shoes and drums available for my truck. 9" and 10" sizes. How would I know which to purchase? Is there any way to find out other than measuring the drum?

thx!
Wily

I would guess it has to do with the trim level of the truck. My truck is a 99 4cyl 2wd and its got 9 inch drums. I would imagine that the 4x4 models have 10 inch drums.

the 2x4 4x4 differences was sort of my thought but I guess th b2300 didn't come in 4x4? I wonder does it matter? Like as long as I buy all 10" or 9" parts would it still work. lol. I feel like my base b2300 is probably rockin' 9" brakes i just want to be sure before i scoop the parts.

Thx!

No, it wont still work. 10" from what I understand came on fx4 LI and LII only. If its not an FX4, you have 9" brakes. If you buy all 10" parts, you will be making another trip to autozone to get the 9" parts because they wont fit.

the rule of thumb on the rear brakes.

Ext cab = 10"

Reg cab = 9"

there has been a few ext cabs with 9" but it isnt common.

also look at them the 9" is finned and the 10" isnt

HAHA no... the only difference level II rangers have on the axle then regular ranger, is its a WHOLE different axle its a 31 spline but the brakes are the same as any other.

What about the regular cab long beds? Wouldn't they have 10" brakes because of the extra bed capacity? I don't know, just throwing the question out there for future reference.

I know my 4X2, regular cab, short bed has 9" brakes.

I think it goes by axle, 7.5" gets 9" 8.8 gets 10"

Not true. Ranger 10" drums existed long before any Ranger FX4 did.

I can't speak to every year and model of Ranger ever built. However, from 2001~2009 at least, several options automatically trigger the 10" drum upgrade. Any one or any combination of the following will do it:

All 4x4's
All SuperCabs
All w/Payload Package 2 upgrade
All 2001~2005 Edge
All 2006~2009 Sport

The above means that, during those years, the 9" drums should have been factory equipment only on XL/XLT regular cab 4x2's with the standard Payload Package 1.

Thank you for all the information everyone!

I had assumed the answer to my question about parts interchange would be no, lol.

Anyone have recommendations on parts? I'm looking at NAPA right now and it appears as though I could get out a bit cheaper with napa than autozone. What do you (being anyone reading this, lol) use when you do a brake job? Any specific brand you like to stick to?

thanks again!
Wily

Actually, it should be possible to swap the 10" brakes in place of the 9" parts because it was available that way from the factory, at least on the Ranger variant it was (Payload Package 2).

You'd need more than just the drums and shoes though. The backing plates are also different between the 9" and 10" brakes and at least some of the self adjuster and spring hardware probably is too. On many years, the slave cylinders are both the same 0.75" ID although that doesn't necessarily mean that they are the same part. With a little research, a swap between 9" and 10" should be easy.

But that brings up another point. Have you actually verified that yours are 9"? If nothing else, you can measure the outside diameter of the drums.

9” drum – roughly 10.5” OD
10” drum – roughly 11.75” OD

before you buy from advance, go to their online site and order from there and choose to pick up from store. there is a place in checkout for discount codes. enter one of these:

http://www.retailmenot.com/view/advanceautoparts.com

I saved $30 on my front rotors and like $20 on brakes by doing this.

I actually hadn't even looked at advance yet. I'll give them a look and see. I know NAPA, Carquest, and another place give us a discount for being students in the automotive program. I think Advance is on that list too. I'll give them a look and see what it would run from there.

Renzing, I havn't verified yet, no. lol. That was one of the reasons i started this thread. I feel like I probably have the 9" brake setup because it is a standard cab, 2x4, 2.3l base trim truck. That being said I don't like to go off assumptions and prefer to verify before I get money invested into a project (or put it on the hoist at 830 at night and find out its the wrong part, even worse feeling)
I actually requested a build sheet for the truck so if that comes in a timely fashion I will just look at that to find out what brakes it has. I won't be doing the brakes for at least another week so if I find time i'll jack it up and take the wheel off to measure.

thx!
