Default Why won't my 4 wheel drive engage on a 1990 Ford Ranger?

1990 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 5Spd auto locking hubs. When I push the button on the dash, the 4x4 indicator lites up and I can hear clicking noises from the module behind the drivers seat, but the front end won't pull. If I then push the button for 4 low, the indicator flashes for a few seconds, then goes out. is this a problem with the electric motor on the transfer case, or is there something else wrong? I don't think it could be the hubs, cause there have never been any strange noises from the front end itself. Everything worked great till I replaced the transmission.
