Default Ranger that needs 4 wheel drive upgrade.

Just bought a sweet little 96 ranger with auto 4 wheel drive. Truck is a 5 speed 3.0 V-6 if that helps.

first off the 4 wheel drive does not engage (i hate auto hubs). the transfer case seems to be working because it will go into low range but without the front tires pulling.

i went ahead & ordered a manual conversion kit that i found in a link on this site (thanks for the link) ordered the hub kit as well.

Now on to my question: since i will be half way in i thought about changing wheel bearings as well but i could not seem to find a thread on here for a 4 wheel drive. I know they make "special" tools that will make it easier, just wondering what they are & how difficult it will be to change them out at the same time i am changing the hubs over...special tools for the hub removal would be a great help as well.

Any & all help is greatly appreciated

Driver side was packed with grease....maybe why they are not working.

wheel bearings are easy to change, atleast the outside is. the inner will require a new wheel bearings seal. Special tools are made, but you can access the nuts with a BFS and a BFH. There is a c-clip on the axle shaft. Remove that, than the two washers (one is grooved). Use the BFS/BFH to remove the two nuts. Then pull off the rotor. ( the brakes will have to be removed)

Thanks poo..update on the hubs.

pulled the covers and removed the workings..cleaned them up & free of grease. lightly oiled them but they still wont work. drive shaft engages so that made me breath easy.

i am guessing the vacuum system....any clues as to where it is? Pic would be nice.
