Default 1998 XLT Deployed Airbag Replacement

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and to Ford Rangers. I bought a 1998 XLT 2WD, 2.5L, manual, regular cab last week. I got it off of craigslist for a great price but had not been told until I got there that the airbags had been deployed. For the shape it was in and everything else, I still had to get it for the price and took a leap for replacing the airbags. The dealer wants $500 for the driver airbag to be replaced and $700 for the passenger side; needless to say, a lot of money. I'm wondering if anyone has replaced them themselves here and has any tips. What parts will I need exactly? I know I'll need the module obviously but what about sensors or are those included? As far as installation goes, from what I've read it basically comes down to unplugging the battery entirely and hooking up the wires of the airbag. Is there any gross understatement I'm making here? My brother is a mechanic so between the two of us, I'm thinking we can do it for sure.
Also, since the driver bag went my horn doesn't work anymore, not knowing enough about the detailed workings of cars in that sense, will the horn be included in the whole wheel module or is there something behind the airbag that will need to be replaced? Also, the cruise control no longer works, does that come down to wires that were broken in the deployment or something simple like that? Thank you very much in advance, I'm loving my truck so far and would like to get some airbags in it!

Darryl

i would search ebay for the bags. usually can be found for $200 or less for the pair. just make sure you get a compatible year.

as for the horn/cruise, you may need to replace the clock spring as well. it's located under the steering wheel (will have to remove the wheel). it is the electric contact between the wheel (horn, airbag, and cruise) and the rest of the column.

Scrap yard, find a compatible year and just pull out a new steering wheel and dash with the airbag.

Thanks for the replies. As far as sensors go though, it looks like mine are still intact if they are indeed the right sensors. The passenger sensor is still connected while the driver side is not. If these are the right sensors, should I be getting new ones just in case or are they alright? Here're some pictures for verification:

Thanks.

i think they will need to be replaced. i'm not sure though. i would get what you know you need, then read the codes. the airbag codes are easy to do. the light will flash a series of times. generally a couple times, short pause, another couple times, long pause, repeat. count how many times and that will be the code IE 2-7, 4-6, etc. you may need to replace the pretensioners in the seats as well.

+1 I had my truck stolen and bought an entire steering column for $140 and it was a very simple swap.

I like that idea a lot actually, it seems safer too. That should fix my cruise control and horn as well. Thank you!
