Question O/D Light & The Shakes

Got the Ranger out of it's parking space, was impressive for 2wd IMO, will have pics later. Was going to back it into the garage did fine in drive, but as soon as i put it in reverse, the RPM jumped up then dropped pretty quickly, the O/D light started flashing, and it shook pretty bad almost like there was a miss in the engine. I put it back in drive and park and it was fine other than the O/D light flashing. Turned it off and back on, not light flashed went through Drive and Reverse and all fine like nothing had happened.

It's did it before and we figured it was just a miss in the engine since it happened to my dad's van the same day, only difference was it was in a heated garage that time and this time it was out in the blizzard.

Any ideas on what would cause it?

Hmm, that's an interesting one. Time to have that code read. Once you do that then we can figure out where about the problem is.

The code readers at the small parts stores can't read Ford transmission codes. You have to go to the trans shop, or find somebody with one of those pricey scanners.

When I had my light go off, I found a trans shop that checked the light for free. Just call around and see what they say. If no trans shop will check the light for free, if you have a local community college with auto tech department, give em a call and ask for auto tech. See if they can do anything to help you out. It'd be a win win, since you get your code read, and the students get trans experience.

^^ thats a good idea, i bet the tech center would do that...only problem is there are a few of the students I don't want within 200ft of my truck. Oh well, i'll figure something out.

Just a follow up, it's ran like a champ since this happened. Mechanic looked it over cause he noticed it was slow going into reverse and he said the fluid and everything is good.

Today was dropping a friend off and i missed his driveway, hit the brakes, not very hard though, and heard a pretty loud bang come from behind the cab. Not sure what it was, it was. Sounded like my little storage box sliding up from the back of the bed to the front and hitting the bed but it hadn't moved. Might have been my bed divider (forgot to look at that) I did notice i had bumped the O/D off switch, but i was in town so i know it never shifted into it, and i didn't change from drive until i was completely stopped.

I think i'm just a little paranoid about stuff going wrong.

2nd Update. Hopefully you guys don't mind me updating this thread, maybe it will help someone else out down the road.

Ran fine in the morning, went to the barber and to my cousins. Then the fun started. At my cousins, put it in reverse after letting it idle, Power went down, O/D light again, this time with a check engine light and it shook like it had Parkinson. Figured i'd be ok once i got it in drive like usual. WRONG, put it in drive, and i couldn't get over 10mph, there was no power when i hit the throttle. Pulled into a driveway a few houses away turned it off and started it back up. drove fine, went up to the fire hall where my dad was working on the trucks. Made it there fine, something didn't feel right though vibration wise. Just so happens the safety officer was there who drives a 99 Ranger. (He's been on the dept for 50 years, was chief back in the day to). He had the same issue with his, said it was the Mass Air Flow Sensor. He goes to the same mechanic i do, so we took it up there after stopping for lunch, ran fine then to other than the Check Engine light being on. Talked to the mechanic and explained what was going on and left it with him. He just called back, read the code, sure enough, "MAF reading not consistent......." Getting the sensor put in as i type this. Hopefully it solves the problem. Will probably post again once I know whats up.

Update: Just got it back. Has a new MAF sensor. Mechanic does have one of high end scanners so he can scan transmission codes to. 3 showed up, the MAF one, a pressure switch one that could be from the tranny or the AC when that went, and a Tranny shift error which could be tied to the MAF. Seems to shift and run fine now. We'll see how it does the next couple of days.

Reviving the old thread.

Pulled out of my grandma's drive way yesterday. Banged into reverse and the truck shook like it had Parkinson's again with the O/D Light flashing. Gave it a little gas and it sounded like it wanted to stall out. Was fine in drive and neutral, put it back in reverse and it did it all again. Made it home, the old man checked it out...now he's realizing why I've been sweating about this. Gonna look around into getting the O/D Light read. Did some reading around the net and it sounds like it could be PCV related. Once i figure out whats wrong i'll update the thread again. Hopefully it helps someone else with this issue.
